Name UL is back with his brand new single ‘Don’t Look Down’ following the successful release of his 14-track project ‘Tape 1’ in April. The London based Kiwi artist takes you down a thought provoking yet smooth and soulful path delving into deep reflection on fame, success and the current landscape for artists in a digital era. The alternative hip-hop artist introduces some interesting new vocal techniques and even a spoken word excerpt to tie two very distinct sections of the song together, it’s clear UL is definitely pushing himself into unknown territory on this record. With tight production from frequent UL collaborator and fellow Wellingtonian HEIST, UL expresses himself in a way we haven’t heard before rapping with a vulnerable tone which becomes more sinister as the track progresses. Quirky vocal edits and a raw mix gives this track a real gritty underground hip hop feel with a fresh twist. Nowadays it can be a quick rise to the top so whatever you do, don’t look down

This is a conceptual song with two distinct parts. The first is from the perspective of a young artist before fame, tossing up why he wants success and how he doesn't want to be ignorant to the potential pitfalls of stardom. The second part is from the perspective of the famous artist who has in fact become successful and come out the other side (some 20,30 years later). The two parts are linked together by a short, spoken word excerpt from the main character's publicist making a public statement on an unknown scandal that has brought the artist much controversy. The statement ends with "reflect on not only his actions, but his thoughts" which takes us into the second half hearing the artist's introspective description of stardom.
